Taking to the water for charity

Intrepid fundraisers from a Shropshire accountancy firm are ready to take the plunge to raise vital charity cash.

Two teams of staff from Dyke Yaxley, Chartered Accountants in Shrewsbury, are taking part in this year's Macmillan Coracle Relay World Championship on Friday 15 June 2012.

They will be competing on the River Severn at the Pengwern Boat Club in the town in a bid to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Adrian Key, who is captain of the "Men Behaving Badly" team, said "Both our teams have had quite a lot of experience as six of our sailors have taken part in the event in previous years.

"So we're hoping for good things this year - but of course just because we've done it before, it's no guarantee of success, so we're all fully prepared in case we spend more time in the water than in the coracles!"

Adrian's team mates are Vinny Crean, Matt Childerhouse and Andrew Young, and there is friendly rivalry between the men's team and the "Dyke Yaxley Divas" team, Sarah Howells, Paula Marshall, Heike Mallinson and captain Pam Mason.

"We're very keen to take on the boys and prove that our team can do well in the championships.  It's all for an excellent cause, and great fun at the same time, so we're hoping people will be generous enough to sponsor us so that we can raise as much cash as possible" said Pam.

As well as coracle relay races, the event offers a whole host of attractions including a hog roast, refreshing Pimms, home-baked cakes and entertainment for the children.
