Best foot forward for charity

Over 30 staff from Dyke Yaxley are hoping they can stay in step to raise money for two charities.

The team from Dyke Yaxley Chartered Accountants, in Shrewsbury and Telford are taking part in “The Steps Challenge 2019” which will run for four weeks.

Groups of four employees will be given a pedometer to calculate their total steps over the course of the challenge and each step they take will help to raise cash for the firm’s chosen charities – Hope House and The Ian Pratt MND Foundation.

And it’s not the first time they’ve set themselves such a mammoth task – their previous efforts saw them notch up almost 23 million steps in eight weeks, raising £135 for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity and Shropshire, Stafforshire and Cheshire Blood Bikes.

Marketing Co-Ordinator Jackie Young said:

“We’ve had 32 colleagues signing up to this latest Steps Challenge and we’re all raring to go in a bid to raise as much money as we can for our charities.

“The average daily recommended step count for people across the UK is 10,000, but for those of us working in an office environment, it’s not uncommon to clock up fewer than 5,000 steps a day.

“Our aim with the Steps Challenge is to give staff some extra motivation to get moving, which gives their own health a boost and raises valuable charity cash as the project progresses too.

“We’re very grateful to everyone who is taking part and to all the generous sponsors who are backing our efforts.”

Hope House offers a range of services including respite and end-of-life care at two hospices and/or within the family home, and support such as counselling and advocacy. They need to raise £6.3 million every year to maintain their services and receive just one month’s funding from statutory bodies.

The Ian Pratt MND Foundation is a volunteer-managed charity supporting those diagnosed and living with Motor Neurone Disease in England and Wales.
