Directors and Persons of Significant Control (PSCs) of UK companies can now voluntarily verify their identity under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA). This new regime, part of the Government’s plan to tackle economic crime, comes into effect for new appointments on 18 November 2025, with all existing directors and PSCs required to complete verification by 17 November 2026. Taking action now can help avoid delays with Companies House filings and reduce the risk of penalties or restrictions on acting as a director.
Why it matters
Failure to verify your identity under the new regime could result in civil penalties, criminal sanctions, or being prohibited from acting as a director. Early verification is strongly encouraged.
How to verify
Individuals can verify their identity directly with Companies House using the GOV.UK One Login service. Options include:
-
The ID Check app (photo ID + facial scan)
-
The online portal (security questions)
-
In-person verification at a participating Post Office
Alternatively, we can act as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) and complete the verification on your behalf. Directors and PSCs will receive a link to a secure portal where they can submit a photo ID and a selfie. Once verified, a unique CH personal code will be issued.
Special considerations for PSCs
New PSCs have a grace period to complete verification: 14 days for individuals and 28 days for Relevant Legal Entities. PSCs can choose to verify early or wait for Companies House follow-up if not yet verified.
Next steps
Directors and PSCs are advised to begin the verification process as soon as possible. Once completed, the CH personal code should be shared with our Company Secretarial team at companysecretary@dykeyaxley.co.uk.
