HMRC website tax error

Taxpayers, with tax owing of up to £2,000, are being advised that HM Revenue and Customs’ online tax return website contains a mistake.

As it stands, the HMRC online system allows people who have tax owing from 2007/08, provided the sum is no more than £2,000, to choose to pay it along with their usual PAYE tax deductions in the coming tax year for 2009/10.

People who filed their returns before 30 December 2008 could, in fact, choose this option, but not those who filed after that date.

The Revenue has been reported as saying that this “option should be unavailable but it is presently available” on the HMRC website. The problem, it added, is being looked at as a matter of urgency.
