Epic trek pays off

A Shropshire Accountant’s courage and determination has helped her to raise almost £4,000 for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Nicola Storar is a member of the Corporate Department at Dyke Yaxley Chartered Accountants, in Shrewsbury, and together with her Dad, Jon, she joined a trek to Everest Base Camp.

“Despite suffering with altitude sickness from the first day, and flight cancellations putting us a day behind schedule, I really had the time of my life,” said Nicola.

“It was a fantastic experience which I am pleased I was able to share with my Dad, and it was by far the most mentally and physically draining thing I have ever done.”

Nicola chose to raise money for The Alzheimer’s Society as the charity is close to her heart because her Nan died aged 65 after suffering with dementia for many years.

“The trek was a major challenge as we were trekking for 13 consecutive days and covered a distance of over 120km, all at high altitude.

“On the day we actually reached Base Camp, it was -30°C, and we did 10 hours’ of walking.  When we arrived, we had a picnic, and then turned round to walk all the way back down!”

Nicola said there were many highlights on the trip, including giving toys to the children in the villages they passed, and skiing with local monks on their home-made skis.

“The best view was from Everest View Point, where there was a 360° view of incredible mountains all around us – it was just breathtaking.”

Nicola has raised over £3,600 for her chosen charity, and said she’d like to thank everyone who had supported her during the challenge.

“Dementia affects one in fourteen people over the age of 65, and one in six over the age of 80, and there is currently no cure.

“I’m very pleased that I was able to push myself to the limit to help The Alzheimer’s Soceity continue to deliver vital support to people with dementia and their families.”
